It's all about the people in the room.
Theater isn't about reaching a massive global audience with your brand. It's about reaching the people you can see from the stage. It's not a restaurant; it's a dinner party. It's not a summer blockbuster; it's that special discovery you can't wait to share with your friends. It's personal, it's small (even when it's big), and it happens in real time, right now. Sorry if you missed it! I can tell you about it but it won't be the same.
When you tell me about the fantastic production I missed, I feel this longing for what might have been. I hate missing things, and it's physically impossible not to, so I feel that sinking feeling of loss and longing a lot. It's an amazing world and there just isn't enough time, ever.
So with that in mind, as I catch myself rushing and straining to do it all and fit it all in, I remind myself: it's all about the people in the room. The people here. Now. Audition, rehearsal, production, coffee--it doesn't matter. That's the show. That's the whole thing. Wish you were here.
